Automobile engineers are professional who are specialized in designing vehicles, repair them with various instruments as well as stylize them.Automobile engineering is a branch of vehicle engineering. There are mainly three types of automotive engineers,ie, Design Engineers,Development Engineers,Production Engineers. Automobile engineers develop and organize testing procedure and analyze and interpret data . If not redesigning the entire vehicle, the design engineers design components of the vehicles, test them in laboratory and then incorporate them in the automobile.

Automobile engineer specialize in a specific area such as aerodynamics and thermodynamics of the vehicles.Ever growing demand of vehicles worldwide has increased the demand for Automobile engineer.

The trend, with auto manufacturers has been to hire mechanical engineers, electrical and electronic engineers as well as metallurgists for the job. In the recent times, in keeping with the demand for car styling, there are design institutes, which offer courses in automobile design. Engineers who undergo such courses contribute significantly to the car companies. The job of an automobile engineer encompasses material treatment, design of control systems (electronics), the Computer Aided Design (CAD) & CAM process and logistics.

Lecturer / College teacher

The main role of a professor is to transfer knowledge and practical skills, methods and techniques, on a particular subject which is his/her area of expertise. A college/university professor teaches graduate and post-graduate students.

A visionary and perpetual seeker of knowledge, a professor remains abreast of the developments in his academic field and constantly strives to expand his/her knowledge of the subject, conducts relevant research, prepares research proposals, publishes or disseminates research findings and seeks accreditation for the same. He/she is a thought leader in his field.

Excellent communication skills, people and team management skills to deal with students, colleagues and staff are some of the important attributes of a good professor. He deals with and supports in the goals of his students, who comprise of a variety of people, coming from different social, religious, economic, cultural backgrounds.

Courses and Eligibility

The following degrees must be obtained to teach in a college or university. These requirements may vary depending upon the chosen stream as per guidelines set by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Step 1: Complete class 12 in a chosen stream, follow by completing graduation to obtain a B.A. / B.Sc. / B.Com i.e. Bachelors’ degree in Arts, Science, Commerce etc. There are a vast range of subjects for which the Bachelors’ degree can be obtained.

Step 2: Complete post-graduation to obtain a Masters’ degree in the chosen field. Candidates must try to obtain at least a minimum score of 55%.

Step 3: Appear for the NET (National Eligibility Test), the qualifying exam for teaching in a college. The eligibility for this test is a minimum 55% at the PG level (with 5% waiver for SC/ST/Tribal/Differently abled candidates). There are also accredited state level tests like the State Level Eligibility Test (SLET/SET). These tests are the minimum eligibility criteria for the appointment as an Assistant Professor in a college / university / institution.

OR

Where the candidate has already completed M.Phil, and/or Ph.D., he/she is eligible to apply directly for the post of an Assistant Professor / Professor (depending on the number of years of teaching experience) without appearing the NET/SLET/SET. However this varies from State to State. In some States the NET/SLET/SET is still a necessity even after obtaining an M.Phil.

Apart from the above, the number of years of teaching experience also count:

A minimum of 8 years are required to qualify as an Assistant Professor.
A minimum of 10 years are required to qualify as a Professor.

Aspiring professors can begin to accumulate their teaching experience by teaching at a senior school level while completing their various degrees. Hence many also do their Bachelors’ in Education which is required for teaching in school. If you obtain a degree in Masters or M.Ed. it will be useful as you could possibly fall in a higher pay bracket. Since you will invest many years in obtaining your various qualifications, it is advisable to begin teaching as early as you can in order to start earning.

After gaining some experience in teaching and obtaining at least a Master degree, you can also then, apply to a college or university to begin teaching as a part-time / guest lecturer.

Keep in mind, that the more the degrees you have completed, more the articles/research papers/journals/books you have published, more the teaching experience you have, the closer you are to becoming a professor and subsequently, a professor at a senior level. Additional qualifications also allow you to enter into bands where the pay scale is higher.

Course Fee

Cost of studying in India will vary depending on the subject and the institution. State run colleges generally cost less than private or specialized institutions. Courses involving practical, laboratory and field work may cost more than purely theoretical subjects. Residential courses will involve accommodation and food expenses over and above the fee structure. All institutions provide you with a detailed fee structure with break-up at the time of application.

Where To Study

A person can opt for day, residential or distance learning programmes depending on the programme, the institution and their convenience.

A Bachelors’ degree may be obtained in the local college in your area. All State Governments and major cities have colleges and universities offering various courses. Many specialized institutes also offer courses such as the Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Technology etc. Always look for an accredited and at least State recognized institution. The Bachelors’ is a 3 year degree course. In some subjects like engineering, medicine etc. it is 4 years. There are some common admission tests and qualifying exams to be taken for entry into various institutions. Examples are the Joint Admission Test for M.Sc., Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), All India Post Graduate Medical Institute Entrance Exam etc. Individual institutes also have their own admission tests. Once you have identified your preferred institutes, you need to find out which tests they require, the dates when the tests are being conducted and when is the last date for submission of applications.

Masters programmes are offered in State and city run universities or at various specialized institutions. Admission is based on merit and performance in the entrance test. A Masters generally takes 2 years to complete.

A Ph.D. can be done at any time and there is no age limit. It can be done as Full Time or Part Time research. Some institutions require scores of tests like GATE, NET or Junior Research Fellowship in order to enroll for a Ph.D.

A Ph.D. aspirant selects a topic and seeks the support of a guide (a person with expertise in the related field) to begin work. Time frames for completing a Ph.D. are 3-6 years for Full Time and 4-7 years for Part Time. An exemption of 1 year may be given if for instance, the applicant has an M.Phil. / M.D etc.

It is possible to obtain grants from universities and various government agencies such as the UGC, NCERT and others to conduct research. Some universities hire Ph.D. students as research assistants.

Distance learning programmes are offered by many big universities and agencies like Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), among others.

Pay and Remuneration

Film editing is an art its not just about cutting and pasting scenes and dialogues, it is basically about picking the right scenes and sounds and creatively putting them together so that a story comes out which can hold the audience for 2-3 hours at a stretch. These days editors use various editing software and technology for their work.

With the penetration of internet, cyber crime has also seen a marked increase. We keep hearing about websites that were hacked, data was stolen from websites and many targeted virus attacks took place. This has lead to a boom in career related to security of the information technology system of organisations.

IT security professionals/ ethical hackers are employed by organisations to protect their computer network. They are entrusted with the work of making a computer system that is secure from malicious hacking.

IT security professionals, who are essentially system and networking experts, are needed to protect the IT system so that no one can penetrate the network and prevent any harmful attack on it. Ethical hacker does just the opposite, he/she attacks a network of computers, penetrates but with the intention of helping the network administrator to make the system secure. Ethical hackers test the security system, report problems and help in making the system more secure.

They work in networking or the security domain. Should be comfortable with many types of operating systems and should be able to work in all kinds of IT environments.

Growth in the crime rates in India and other parts of world have increased the need for policing. Law enforcement agencies in India are controlled by Ministry of Home Affairs and these law enforcement agencies are headed by IPS ( Indian Police Services) officers. Law and order in the states and territories is maintained and all routine policing is carried out by state-level police forces.

At state, national and international level there are Police Officers/Detectives. They enforce laws, catch criminals, collect evidence and testify in court. There is Criminal Investigation Department (CID) whose main role is to investigate serious crime and to act upon intelligence, which can lead to the arrest and prosecution of persistent offenders. There is Firearms Unit, They are trained in the use of firearms and are drafted in to support operations, which require armed assistance. Career in police as firearms is also becoming very demanding and officer have to risk his or her life while saving the others. There is also a Fraud Investigation Unit which deals with company business fraud, major deceptions and corruption allegations, and also provides assistance and guidance for area detectives on various matters pertaining to fraud investigation. Then there is Special Branch in police officers jobs primarily to acquire intelligence for the protection of national security, in particular protection against terrorism, espionage, sabotage, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and from actions intended to overthrow democracy by political, industrial or violent means. There is Traffic Unit that keeps the constant vigil on the traffic. They ensure road safety by enforcing traffic laws, including those relating to speeding and drink driving. There are also Forensic Experts who help in investigation of cases.

There are some related occupations to police and various other forces are like Central Police Forces CPF, Central Industrial Security Force CISF, Various state police and Border Police.

The state police is responsible for maintaining law and order in townships of the state and the rural areas. States get their police force trained by advanced police training schools. State-level police forces are separate and may differ in terms of the quality of equipment and resources, their patterns of organization and operation are markedly similar. A Director-general or inspector general, answerable to the home secretary of the state, heads each state, union territory, or national capital territory police force. Under the inspector general are a number of police ""ranges"" composed of three to six districts, headed by deputy inspectors general. District police headquarters are commanded by superintendents. District superintendents have wide discretionary powers and are responsible for overseeing subordinate police stations as well as specialty elements, such as criminal investigation detachments, equipment storehouses and armories, and traffic police. Many large districts also have several assistant district superintendents. Most preventive police work is carried out by constables assigned to police stations. In most states and territories, police forces are functionally divided into civil (unarmed) police and armed contingents. The former staff police stations, conduct investigations, answer routine complaints, perform traffic duties, and patrol the streets. They usually carry lathis—bamboo staffs weighted or tipped with iron.

Contingents of armed police are divided into two groups, the district armed police and the Provincial Armed Constabulary. They are assigned to police stations and perform guard and escort duties. Those states that maintain distinct armed contingents employ them as a reserve strike force for emergencies. Such units are organized either as a mobile armed force under direct state control or in the case of district armed police (who are not as well equipped) as a force directed by district superintendents and generally used for riot-control duty.

The Provincial Armed Constabulary (Pradeshik) is an armed reserve maintained at key locations in some states and active only on orders from the deputy inspector general and higher-level authorities. Armed constabulary are not usually in contact with the public until they are assigned to VIP duty or assigned to maintain order during fairs, festivals, athletic events, elections, and natural disasters. They may also be sent to quell outbreaks of student or labor unrest, organized crime, and communal riots; to maintain key guard posts; and to participate in anti-terrorist operations. Depending on the type of assignment, the Provincial Armed Constabulary may carry only lathis .

Courses and Eligibility

Gazetted Police officers are recruited by the Union Public Service Commission through a competitive nationwide examination. On completion of a nationwide basic public-service course, police officer candidates attend the National Police Academy at Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. They are then assigned to particular state or union territory forces, where they usually remain for the rest of their careers.

Each state and union territory of India has a state police force. The officers and other staff in the state police are selected by respective state commissions. They lay down the requirements of qualification, written examination, age limit and physical test. One must clear the prescribed requirements in order to join police officer jobs.

The IPS examination is conducted in three stages. Any graduate Indian national is eligible to write the exam. The first stage consists of objective test called Preliminary examination. Candidates who clear this sits for written test called the Main exam. This is followed by an interview. Candidates who clear the IPS then joins the cadre in the any one of the Indian state and start their police jobs in India.

Without clearing the IPS exam one can enter the Police force as any non-gazetted officer or as a constable. The requirement for each post is different. Based on your education you can directly join any of the post depending upon the vacancy.
One can also join the Central Police forces like BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, and SSB. UPSC conducts an All India exam for the position of Assitant Commandant in A grade in these forces. The exam is called the CAPF Exam. Graduates from all streams are eligibe to take up this exam.

"A great photograph is one that fully expresses what one feels, in the deepest sense, about what is being photographed"

A photographer is a person who takes photographs. However, there is much more to photographs than just picking up a camera and shooting pictures. For instance, one needs to be aware of the lens aperture, the amount of light exposure, ISO speed etc. It is a photographer who works on these minute details to bring out the best of a present scenario.

A professional photographer usually works for firms, newspapers, magazines, websites, blogs or freelancer. The importance of photographers simply cannot be neglected as they are required in lots of fields. With time, the base of photographers and demand of their work is spreading. As a result policemen, real estate agents and even scientists need photographers for their aid. A few photographers do not work for anyone but themselves. Once they are done with their pictures they put it up for display or sell.

A photographer is also at times responsible for moving pictures and at such times they are called as cinematographer. There are quite a few types of photography and it depends solely on the interested person, which field they wish to choose. For an instance one can take up street photography, document photography, wedding photography, forensic photography, war photography, photojournalism, fashion photography or commercial photography.

What really separates a professional photographer and a casual photographer is the amount of stress given to minute details which make a photo better or perhaps, the best. A photographer has a different perception of life and things and tries his/her best to bring along emotions along with creativity. It is only when people feel they are connected to a picture or photo that a photographer can claim that he or she is successful.

Microbiologist

Microbiology is the study of microorganisms - little, really little, critters. To be specific, microorganisms are the organisms which can only be seen through a microscope - they form the foundation of the pyramid of life. Some microbes are hugely useful to mankind (the yeast microbe used in baking and brewing, other bacteria and fungi used in the dairy industry to make cheese and curd) and others (those that cause infections in humans, plants and animals) are plainly harmful. Microbiologists investigate the fascinating world of microorganisms. They are in involved both in discovering how to cultivate and use the good ones and how to isolate and then use the infectious ones in formulating vaccines and antibiotics to treat or protect against the very diseases they cause. Every day, microbiologists around the world explore, investigate and discover how microbes exist and affect our lives. Microbiology is an exciting and challenging field because it seeks to find drugs for life-threatening illnesses.

Microbiologists can specialize in a variety of areas. From the food to the space industries, and everywhere in between, there are many opportunities for microbiologists! Following is a list of some of the many career options available to microbiologists.

Bacteriologists: Seeks to answer basic questions about bacterial growth, metabolism, diversity and evolution.

Biochemists: Discovers and teaches us how organisms obtain energy, consume nutrients and reproduce.

Biotechnologists: Manipulates genes in order to modify microorganisms. They produce novel organisms that make new products for human use. (i.e. insulin, medicine, grocery store items).

Cell Biologists: Explores the actions of molecules on and in the cell. Their investigations determine how microorganisms and cell function.

Environmental Scientists: Investigates the effects of biological, chemical, and geophysical activity on the environment.

Geneticists: Studies the process by which organisms inherit and transmit genetic information.

Immunologists: Investigates the body's defense against disease to answer basic questions about bacterial growth, metabolism, diversity and evolution.

Mycologist: Explores the various uses of molds and yeasts for the production of antibiotics as well as food.

Parasitologists: Investigates the complex life cycles of and adaptations made by organisms which depend on other organisms for survival.

Virologists: Studies viruses and bacteriophages. Virologists are interested in how viruses change and are always on the alert for new types. They can even choose a career as science writer, who writes articles for common people and professional microbiologists.

How?????

Courses & Eligibility

You have to take the science stream, choosing biology as one of your subjects at 10+2 level. A few colleges and universities offer Microbiology at the undergraduate level. But even if your university does not offer it, don’t worry. Just make sure you do your graduation in life science, be it Botany or Zoology or Biochemistry. After an undergrad degree with life sciences, or with at least one subject being a life science, you could apply for a post-grad degree in Microbiology at any one of the number of Indian universities that offer it.

Selection is made on the basis of merit. However, few universities conduct written entrance examination for selecting candidates. You can also specialize in the study of micro-organisms in the fields of their interest such as bacteriology; study of bacteria, mycology; study of fungi and virology; study of viruses.

Different institutes, colleges and universities conduct different entrances for M.Sc. Microbiology across India. The list of entrances is as follows -
The Merchant Navy is a non-combatant commercial fleet, which deals with transporting cargo and passengers by sea. Its fleet is therefore composed of passenger vessels, cargo, liner tankers, carriers, as well as other special types of vehicles. Merchant navy is a career full of adventure and long voyages to different beautiful places. In spite of a lot of hard work and long absence from home, the Merchant navy professionals earn a high tax free salary, with other numerous benefits and promising promotional opportunities. This makes merchant navy a lucrative and exciting career.

The main positions open in the merchant navy are for marine engineers, navigating officers and radio officers. In a field which was hitherto purely for men, there is some positive change visible now, with many women joining merchant navy as ship doctors and radio officers.

The employment on board a ship is divided into three different streams. Deck officers, Engineers and Ratings. Deck officers are headed by the Captain of the ship. Deck officers are responsible for navigation, safe and efficient movement of the ship and transportation of cargo. To navigate the ship they use a range of satellite, radar systems and equipments and communication systems. Checking weather and navigation reports is very important; it helps in taking appropriate action. Deck officers monitor the loading, storage and unloading of cargo and the maintenance of deck machinery. They also take care of the safety, firefighting and life-saving equipment in terms of any emergency. They also maintain the legal and operational records.

The Engineering department looks after the main engine, which is gigantic and complicated. Engineers also need to be updated with new developments in the marine engineering field.

Ratings has three categories. Deck rating is responsible for handling cargo, mooring / unmooring and general maintenance. Engine ratings who help the engineering officers in maintenance of engine and other equipments. Saloon (catering) consists of steward / cooks, they look after the housekeeping and catering.

Medical Science is based upon two streams - medicine and surgery. Both have their own significance and that is why both types of doctors play a vital role in the field of medical science. A Medical Surgeon is specialist doctor who performs surgery. The surgical treatment is becoming more important these days because of the complexities of physical ailments. These doctors are skilled in cutting open the body parts and performing the operations.

The courses offered in medical sciences essentially are in two fields, namely Medicine and Surgery, and the Medical Surgeon is a specialist in surgery. He is a person who is responsible for removing the unwanted parts/organs from the human body which cause the ailments. The treatment of this kind is certainly very much technical and the surgeon needs to be very patient and composed before carrying out his operations.

A Medical Surgeon is trained in many specific branches of Surgery as human body can suffer from many types of physical ailments and that is why the branches of surgery changes for meeting these separate surgeries. Some of these branches are plastic surgery, cardio thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, cancer surgery, gastro intestinal surgery and endocrine surgery. These days, newer branches of surgery are also opening up as the complexities are growing. Different types of transplants, laparoscopic surgery, and other types of surgeries are put in this category. Some surgeries are done in an elaborate manner whereas some others are done with the help of micro surgeries.

Whatever be the type of surgery in the hands of a Medical Surgeon, he needs to be extremely careful about his responsibilities after taking the patient on the operation table. He must have a very clear idea of his task. Usually, any type of surgery is done in the high quality or superspeciality hospital or nursing home where a team of support staff assists him while performing the operations. A surgeon becomes expert with making more and more successful operations. However, the attitude of a surgeon play an important role in the entire process of operation as his patients have a deeper faith in him and his abilities on the operation table.

Courses and Eligibility

A Medical surgeon is essentially a student of science. He therefore selects Science as his basic subject right from the preliminary education. However, his specialization begins from Higher Secondary stages where he needs to continue with Biology, Physics, and Chemistry. With good qualifying marks in 10+2, he is required to appear in Medical entrance tests. His performance in the entrance test makes him get the admission in the medical course.

Successful candidates get admission in the MBBS course which is the baisc course and is essential for both doctors of Medicine and Surgeons. The subject of specialization begins only after the budding doctors clear the MBBS course. These courses are regulated in the medical colleges which are affiliated to and recognized by the Medical Council of India. At present, there are about 250 Medical colleges all over India where the number of seats is stipulated every year.

Course/ Curriculum:

The course of specialization begins only after the successful completion of MBBS. The next step is completed in the following phases:

Phase 1: Qualification for the PG entrance

Phase 2: Qualify for MS in Surgery

Phase 3: Training as a Senior Resident in any recognized hospital

Phase 4: Super-specialization- MCH

The successful completion of all these phases can see one qualified Medical Surgeon.

Where To Study/College

There are both government and private medical collegs in India that offer MBBS course; however not every collge offers a PG course in Surgery. Here are a few good colleges that offer masters degree in surgery.

Mathematics can be defined as the scientific study of quantities, including their relationships, operations and measurements expressed by numbers and symbols. In simple words, mathematics deals with study of numbers and their various calculations. The most important skills in mathematics are analysis and reasoning.

A mathematician is a person whose primary area of study or research is mathematics. Mathematicians are concerned with particular problems related to logic, space, transformations, numbers and more general ideas which encompass these concepts. They do research, come up with problems and solutions, etc.

Mathematicians solve problems in diverse fields such as medicine, management, economics, banking, government, insurance, computer science, physics, psychology, engineering, bio-mathematics, bio-informatics and weather forecasting.

Mathematics can be pursued with other allied subjects and various careers can be pursued. After BSc Mathematics with B Ed and higher education like MSc Mathematics one can become a teacher. After BSc mathematics followed by MSc stats/ MSc Operations Research one can become a statistician. One can become an economist or Actuary after BSc Mathematics with Economics and higher studies. One can also become a Physical Sciences Observer/Scientist after BSc Mathematics, MSc Physics. A career in life sciences can be pursued with BSc Mathematics combined biology.

Present day customers are kings, thus businesses have to offer their products or services as per the customer needs. To get information about all of these aspects, organisations use market/ marketing research. Through Market or Marketing Research the companies or organisations get data and information about their customers. The information collected is used to draw necessary conclusions and make predictions for future sales and marketing efforts. The information is collected and analysed through various statistical tools. Market research is not restricted to present customers but includes potential customers and competitors and future products and markets.

Market Researchers are professionals who help in gathering information concerning consumers' opinions, tastes, needs and desires for the organisations. They use various statistical tools and mathematical tools to make sense of the data collected through surveys etc. This information helps companies in taking future decisions like which product line should they focus, what should be ideal price etc. Market researchers help in studying the markets, consumer preferences and in establishing marketing strategies for new and old products.

With the help of field people, they compile the data, evaluate it and make recommendations to their client or employer based on their findings. They provide a company’s management with information needed to make decisions on the promotion, distribution, design, and pricing of products or services. The information may also be used to determine the advisability of adding new lines of merchandise, opening new branches, or otherwise diversifying the company’s operations. Market Research Analysts might also develop advertising brochures and commercials, sales plans, and product promotions such as rebates and giveaways.

Market researchers design and conduct surveys for a variety of clients such as corporations, government agencies, political candidates, and service providers. They use a variety of mediums to conduct surveys, such as the Internet, personal or telephone interviews, or mail questionnaires. Market Researchers usually work on a research team with statisticians, motivational research specialists who design survey questions, pollsters, interviewers, IT specialists and a variety of others.

studying, observing, protecting, or managing marine plants or animals. They
work on marine fishes, work in preserving various species and do research on
marine life. As the classification of the plant and animal species are not
based upon taxonomy but on the environment thus modern-day marine biologists

Linguistics is the scientific study of languages.
Linguistics deals with the structure and development of particular language and
its relationship to other languages. It is the study not of one particular
language but of human language in general. There are mainly two broad divisions
of linguistics: theoretical linguistics and applied linguistics.

While theoretical linguistics is divided into many separate
areas like: Phonetics, the study of different sounds that are employed across
all human languages; Phonology, the study of patterns of a language’s basic
sounds; Morphology, the study of the internal structure of words; Syntax, the
study of how words combine to form grammatical sentences; Semantics, the study
of the meaning of words, and how these words combine to form grammatical
sentences; Stylistics, the study of style in languages; Pragmatics, the study
of how utterances are used (figuratively, literally or otherwise) in
communicative acts.

Applied linguistics covers the area of language teaching and
the areas of speech synthesis, speech recognition and speech/language pathology
as well. Thus, one can use linguistics to provide voice interface for
computers, voice recognition etc.

A Linguist is someone who studies and works with language,
or specific languages. Sometimes they combine words from many languages to form
a new language which people from many countries can follow. For example:
Esperanto is a language made from combining the words from different European
languages.

Sometimes, linguists work with computer specialists to
create voice interfaces with computers, and look for ways to make computers
respond to voice commands.

Sometimes, they learn many languages and teach others.

Psycholinguists undertake psychological study of language
learning.

Bio-linguists study anatomical and physiological foundations
of the spoken language, Including development of the language.

Neuro-linguists study brain functioning involved in
comprehension, abstract thinking and language production.

Socio-linguists study mans' role in relation to languages,
i.e, the correlation between social groups based on language, linguistic
customs etc. It also covers linguistic aspects of small group interaction,
conformity, structural hierarchy etc.

Ethno-linguistics focuses on the study of mans' customs as
shown by language. It is used for film making, copy-writing, therapy of the
speech handicapped.

Basically, linguists are a specialist in language and
usually employ the language skills to earn money. There are formal courses,
degrees and diplomas which recognized universities offer to budding linguists.
Most of the linguists work as translators, as content creators for education
industry, or language specialists with multinational companies, government's
foreign office, embassies etc.

There are many branches of law but essentially a lawyer has
to present the case of his client before the tribunal or the court. A lot of

of a lawyer to refer to the updated laws and previous cases and these have to
be quoted while formulating a case and presenting it in the court. The lawyer

The definition of the word ‘journalism’ would take you back
to the origin of the newspaper, where the profession of ‘journaling’ daily
events, happening and announcements came to be termed as Journalism. In modern
times, not much has changed and journalism still refers to the investigation
and reporting of events, issues and trends to a mass audience. Given the power
of mass media in today’s world, journalism is a much venerated profession. A
journalist may find a role and position in any of the following media:

are interested in print and online media. To be a successful television and
radio journalist, you need to have an incredible verbal communication skills
and a pleasing personality.

Journalists often develop an area of interest and make it
their desired ‘beat’, or subject of reportage through their career. Most
journalists at the start of their career try one or more beats to see which
they enjoy more. More often than not, many news organisations assign specific
beats to reporters so that they can test them better. Some of the most popular
beats in the news world are the following:

Have you ever seen a news channel blink? That’s because news
never stops! Journalism is a demanding profession and it’s definitely not for
the weak-hearted. It’s almost a round-the-clock job, where a journalist is
expected to be aware and available for any news development. As a journalist
you will be expected to respond quickly, think on your feet, be resourceful and
most importantly be inquisitive.

current affairs and have a go-getter persoality!

A word of caution – Due to the overreaching existence of
media today, journalism and mass communication schools are mushrooming in every
corner of the country. It is advisable to do a thorogh background check of the
institute. Find out about the curricula, the teachers (check if they are
industry trained), guest faculty, internship and placement history, workshops
and exposure; you must also look for references, find former students of the
institute and see what they have to say about the school and its course.
Career Prospects

Journalism is a career where almost every fresher begins as
a cub reporter or trainee. Generally a beat is assigned and you are expected to
deliver quality news stories with great efficiency. Once you have established
your forte in a chosen field of reporting, you can qualify to be a
Correspondent / Special Reporter, one who has the ability to interpret, analyse
and present news with a totalitarian view. The next step would be that of a Sub
Editor, one who sorts the content to be published; rewrites news stories and
correct grammatical errors. A sub editor also checks news articles for their
innovative headlines and therefore must be someone with a deep sense of news,
language and imagination. In a news channel, this person is typically part of
the input desk that fine tunes the stories that are to be aired. Next up is an
Associate Editor who assigns stories to reporters, ensures they come in on
time, plans parts of the paper, designs the layout, writes and readies news,
reviews and critical analysis pieces. In the electronic medium, this person is
part of assignment/ output desk; he assigns stories, brings various inputs,
arranges for footage from remote locations, and is overall responsible for the
news that is produced on a daily basis. Editor is the one who heads the ship.
It’s a position that comes with years of experience and demonstrated career of
great news reportage. An editor gives a news organisation a vision. Typically
he/she is the one who decides the voice of the paper / magazine / channel. As
the most definitive face of the organisation, the editor is a position of great
power and greater responsibility.

Journalism at one time was the domain of whosoever wrote
written content or reported on a news story. The person who got the visuals and
photographs were often called cameraperson / photographer. Today, however much
of that has changed. Photographers have transformed into photo-journalists with
their active involvement in bringing newsworthy pictures. Similarly,
videojournalism is a dynamic process in the electronic news gathering process.
